SCHOOL BASED PROVISIONS

Otters

Otters is a specialist provision, established by the school to support students with complex needs (particularly learning / ASD / communication difficulties).

The class has a highly structured, nurturing environment, where children benefit from smaller class sizes and a high ratio of adults.

The bespoke curriculum is developed to meet the specific needs of the children within the group.

In Squirrels and Foxes this term we will be learning about the following:

English

This term, we will be working on the theme of “Journeys”.

Our story will be "The Journey Home" which is all about a group of animals having to leave their homes to find somewhere safe to live.  The story is a great way to introduce the vocabulary needed to describe wild animals. For some children, we will talk about colours and sizes, and for other children we will extend their learning by talking about features such as fur, feathers, claws and wings. The children will share books about animals and will be introduced to the signs and symbols linked to them.

The children will be engaged in a variety of writing activities, ranging from mark making in sensory materials to simple sentence writing. Children will be encouraged to read and write their names too. We will be focusing on our Core Words and the signs, symbols and words linked to these.

Maths

We will be using maths skills to match, sort, order and solve simple problems. We will learn number rhymes and share number stories. Children will be supported to recognise numbers in the environment and learn to write them. We will also explore place value, addition and subtraction with the older children.

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be thinking about “being kind”.  Being kind to ourselves, being kind to others and being kind to our environment.

Topics that we will be covering across the term

  • Science - We will be finding out about and comparing different habitats including polar lands and the jungle.
  • ICT - We will be using programmes to create pictures and make sounds.
  • Design Technology - We will be making battery-operated vehicles move.

PE

Our children will be given the opportunity to go swimming this term, starting with our older pupils.  Please keep an eye on Dojo to find out when your child will have their sessions.

We will work with all the children to improve their self-help skills.

Homework

Please share the videos that are added to Dojo, to allow your children to become familiar with the stories, rhymes and signs we will be using each week. Some children will also bring home reading books.

Planned Trips

There are no planned trips.
